Abstract
Local knowledge should be studied to develop people’s cultural identity to form their character, strengthen their personality, and create strong individuals who can overcome all life’s struggles. Having said this, studying history becomes necessary. This paper proposes integrating local knowledge elective topics into the Araling Panlipunan Subject to strengthen the cultural identity of the young Batangueños. The researchers needed to address the looming crisis in studying local history to uphold the Batangueño identity. Moreover, this study intends to remedy and fill the gap in understanding local knowledge and history. The researcher made a sur and reliability testing. This paper focused on 75 secondary education teachers selected through convenience sampling from public and private institutions within Batangas City. Researchers utilized the quantitative descriptive method using statistical tools such as measures of central tendency, ANOVA, and T-test to treat the data and determine the results. The result shows that secondary school teachers strongly agree that the study of local knowledge is essential. However, the results also revealed that they have a low level of understanding of the significant people, events, places, and landmarks in the history of Batangas City. Lastly, the study showed no significant difference in the levels of importance and understanding of local knowledge when grouped according to the profile variables. The study implies that the respondents agree that teaching local knowledge and history is necessary and that the teachers lack the necessary knowledge to facilitate the teaching of the said topics. Hence, the researchers proposed elective topics that DepEd may include in the Araling Panlipunan subject for Junior High School Basic Education.
